Citizens' Empowerment in Kenya
Voter and civic education are vital mechanisms to ensure that constituents understand their rights, the nature of political processes and what options are available to them when voting. Such education can be vital, particularly for women and minority groups, if they have traditionally been excluded or marginalised in the political arena.
WFD has supported the Kenyan Women’s Workers Organisation (KEWWO) to work with citizens in rural areas of Kitui to increase public understanding, particularly among women, of the importance of the civic engagement in the electoral process. The project aims to mobilise citizens to exercise their political rights within a democratic governance framework. KEWWO is training trainers to provide appropriate leadership skills to women and men aspiring to political posts or those already in decision-making and leadership roles. It is hoped that participants will have the skills and confidence to proactively engage in decision-making processes and to stand for election.
