WFD’s programme in Kenya aims to strengthen civic and political engagement in a multiparty democracy.WFD's programmes in Kenya support a range of civil society organisations and the Kenya National Assembly. Our support focuses on strengthening media, support for the constitutional review process, civic participation, gender relations and human rights. The UK political parties also engage with local political parties.WFD consults a wide range of stakeholders in Kenya on designing programmes that reflect national priorities. WFD will support local organisations (NGOs, civil society organisations, media institutions, professional associations, women’s and youth organisations) that contribute to civic engagement in a multiparty democracy within parliament.
The violence following the 2007 elections demonstrated the fault lines in Kenya's democratic consolidation. Following this, WFD organised a study visit to the Westminster Parliament for the Speaker and the Chief Whips of the Kenya National Assembly. The visit comprised representatives from across the political divide which was especially significant due to the post election crisis. WFD is now working with local stakeholders to support democratic processes in the forthcoming challenges.
