In addition to the three main Westminster parties, WFD also supports projects through the smaller parties represented in Westminster. These parties have their base in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and all are major parties in their respective regions
Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) The DUP is the largest party in Northern Ireland and has 9 MPs in Westminster and 36 MLAs in the Northern Ireland Assembly and one MEP in Strasbourg. The DUP currently heads the executive in Northern Ireland. The party is led by Rt. Hon Peter Robinson MP MLA. The DUP has focused its support with smaller parties in Southern Africa.
Plaid Cymru, the Party of Wales, is in coalition government in the Welsh Assembly Government. The party has 15 AM s in the National Assembly for Wales, two MPs in Westminster and one MEP in Strasbourg. Plaid Cymru has used its expertise in campaigning and has been particularly involved with the Sobor youth wing in Ukraine. The party is led in the assembly by Ieuan Wyn Jones AC/AM and in Westminster by Elfyn Llwyd MP.
Scottish National Party (SNP)
The SNP is the largest party in Scotland. In the Scottish Parliament, they currently form the Scottish Government and have 47 MSP's. At Westminster, the party has seven MPs, two MEPs within the European Parliament, and over 350 local councillors throughout Scotland. The SNP focuses its work in Malawi and Zambia that both a strong Scottish connection; looking at how small parties organise and effectively communicate with their supporters. The party is led by Alex Salmond MP MSP.
Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP)
The SDLP is led by Mark Durkan MP MLA. The party has three MPs in Westminster and 16 MLAs. The party offers wide ranging skills in peace building, mediation, conflict resolution, motivating voters where democracy is struggling and running campaigns in conflict situations. The party is currently working with socialist youth in Georgia.
Ulster Unionist Party (UUP)
The UUP is the oldest Unionist party in Northern Ireland and currently has one MP in Westminster, 18 MLAs in the Northern Ireland Assembly, four peers in the House of Lords and one MEP in Strasbourg. The UUP is led by Sir Reg Empey MLA. The UUP has used its extensive experience in conflict resolution with the other parties, mainly in Lebanon.
