Communications and External Relations Officer

June 18th, 2019
Location: London
Contract type: Full-time
Contract length: Permanent Contract
Salary: £29,053-£33,765

Help us make a difference to the lives of millions of young people, women, persons with disabilities, LGBT and others who are marginalised in the politics of over 40 developing countries. Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) is the UK public body dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world. We are looking for an enthusiastic and digitally-savvy communications officer to join our team.

This job is a great opportunity to continue developing a communications career in the field of international development, while working for a public sector organisation with strong values at the heart of its growing operations.

Based in London (with occasional international travel), you will coordinate communications from over 50 programmes from all regions of the world, working with a diverse and multi-cultural group of colleagues, in a fast-paced environment at the intersection between politics, foreign affairs and international development.

The job will involve investigating, documenting and communicating great stories about the people that are working all around the world to make politics more inclusive and government more accountable. It involves partnering with other European, Commonwealth and international organisations.

You will be managing our digital communications (web, newsletter, social media) while supporting efforts to engage stakeholders in the UK and overseas (events, media and publications). You will also help us develop our internal engagement and the communications capability of front-line staff, as the organisation grows to meet demand for UK expertise in the fields of parliamentary practice, transparency, environmental and equality policy, political engagement and elections.

There is no typical day at WFD. Our small communications team handles a variety of jobs: you may be asked to craft great quality content for the press or social media, help organise an event in Parliament or fly to one of our country offices to document programme results. We are flexible, politically-aware and aim for excellence in government communications.

And as a public body of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, you will be eligible for membership of the Government Communications Service. This will support your professional development alongside regular learning and development opportunities, which we also provide, to ensure we are always on top of our game.

Skills and experience:

  • At least 2 years professional experience in any or a combination of the following fields: journalism, civil service (communications), parliament or public affairs
  • Experience working with – or within – UK government or parliament
  • Experience working with – or within – UK national media
  • Exceptional written English, suitable for press use
  • Experience managing digital media channels

WFD offers the following benefits:

  • Civil Service pension- defined benefit: Generous employer contribution up to 27.9%
  • 25 days paid annual leave and 8 public holidays
  • Good work life balance – flexible working hours, ability to work from home/remotely.
  • Friendly, supportive, inclusive and engaging environment (working with people who are passionate about positive change and strengthening democracy around the world).
  • Transport Season Ticket Loan
