Made up of more than 800 islands, the Myeik Archipelago in southern Myanmar is home to hundreds of marine species, untouched coral reefs, a diverse range of wildlife, and extraordinary beaches with crystal clear waters. In addition to serving as a destination for adventure tourism, it is also home to fishing communities who depend on marine resources for their livelihoods.

In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, over 100 countries have passed emergency laws or declared states of emergency. While science gives a strong justification for controlling the rapid spread of the coronavirus by limiting the movement of people, closing businesses and enforcing social distancing, there is a serious risk of creating an unintentional wave of authoritarianism by curtailing civil liberties on a massive scale.

Since February 2018, WFD has been supporting the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia to set up a parliamentary budget office (PBO) in order to support more efficient and effective spending of citizens’ money through better oversight.
On 5 February, 2019, the PBO was officially opened at an inauguration ceremony in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.

In January 2020, WFD worked with the University of Makeni in Sierra Leone to organise a panel discussion about citizen participation in enhancing inclusive and accountable politics.

Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16) is a hugely significant commitment because it makes an explicit connection between global development and the importance of peace, justice and good governance. Democratic institutions have an important role to play in delivering the Global Goals everywhere.
