In the last nine months Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) Nigeria – in partnership with the Nigerian National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) – focused on modalities for inclusive and effective participation of underrepresented groups in political parties. Through a project titled Political Party Watch (PPW), the partnership built on an earlier study conducted by WFD in 2021. The study found there was a need to increase the level of transparency, accountability, and inclusion of underrepresented groups to participate effectively into political parties’ procedures and operations.

Youth is an essential part of every country's social and political future. However, there is often a need for more focus on what the youth's role in the social and political present. WFD researched the role young people had in the Montenegrin elections of 2020 and summarised our conclusions.

WFD hosted a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK) delegation and convened a women MPs mentorship workshop, in partnership with the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA) and UN Women. The workshop – which targeted new women parliamentarians – explored effective committee work and impactful external communications.

For over 16 months, WFD has worked with MPs belonging to the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Youth Affairs (UPFYA) and the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA) to build their capacity to engage with their respective stakeholders and generate momentum to influence parliament’s agenda in favour of the advancement of women and youth in Uganda.

Within WFD’s “More than a quota” mentorship programme, a group of women politicians from different political parties works on getting the issue on the agenda through advocacy and legislative work.
Ensuring that women and minority groups in Bangsamoro have political voice and meaningful representation is essential to enable the autonomous region to transition into a working democratic entity. In support of this vision, WFD recently held a Strategic Planning Workshop on Political Advocacy for members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Social Welfare Committee (SWC) in Bangsamoro. From 11th – 13th August 2021, 20 members of the SWC gathered for the event which took place in Isulan town, Sultan Kuarat.
Disability inclusion promotes democracy. To promote a consistent approach to inclusion of persons with disabilities in political party activities in Kenya, a document containing minimum standards on disability inclusion has been developed. This is through a WFD and Demo Finland facilitated a participatory working session with representatives from disability rights civil society organizations, disabled persons organizations, and political parties. These representatives have identified and brainstormed on the critical aspects/domains that political parties should focus on to improve their disability inclusion efforts.

Representatives from 13 Arab countries, the Tunisian Ministry for Women, Family and Childhood, and the Coalition of Women MPs from Arab Countries Combating Violence Against Women gathered in Tunis for a two-day summit on 16 and 17 November.
WFD’s work with Kenyan political parties, funded by Demo Finland, helped ensure persons with disabilities (PWDs) are included in political parties’ governing committees. It also helped to remove barriers so they could actively engage in the contestation of elections ahead of the Kenyan general elections in August 2022.

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol). As we commemorate two decades of this groundbreaking treaty, we take stock of its significance and impact, and the work that still lies ahead.
In January 2020, WFD worked with the University of Makeni in Sierra Leone to organise a panel discussion about citizen participation in enhancing inclusive and accountable politics.
