WFD will implement a £4 million programme to build trust in democratic institutions and support the political engagement of minorities and vulnerable groups in 18 developing countries across the Commonwealth.
In September 2019, WFD and the Albanian Enterprise Institute published a study which outlined and analysed the costs that at present are incurred by party candidates. The study reveals how much the political landscape in Albania is open to citizens' engagement with politics.

WFD engaged with key stakeholders, including women leaders and democratic institutions, working to support the country’s democratic transition process. From 2018 to 2021, WFD delivered negotiations and peacebuilding workshops and developed links between key leaders preparing the country for a peaceful transition towards a multi-party democracy.

At the invitation of Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), WFD's Thematic Election Expert Observation Mission (TEEOM) observed the 4 December 2021 presidential election of The Gambia from 31 October 2021. The mission assessed participation of women and inclusivity more broadly based on relevant regional and international standards for elections. It also assessed the role of media and social media in the election.

Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and Kaleidoscope Trust (KT) are pleased to announce the launch of the Global Equality Project (GEP) – a joint programme working to strengthen the inclusion of women, girls, LGBT+ people, and other people with intersecting identities and experiences in democratic processes.
Around the world, WFD is helping to make countries’ political systems more accountable. In an accountable political system, citizens can hold people with power responsible for their decisions, usually via parliament and civil society.
In Albania, WFD is working to help improve political party accessibility. We do this by working with their youth wings and by generating research and evidence for improving the political and national discourse.
WFD Albania also works with civil society organisations (CSOs) to strengthen their advocacy capacities, facilitate networking and exchange among them, and helping them to better interact with different layers of governance. The focus of the work with CSOs has been in the health sector and environmental democracy.
Furthermore, we assessed the dynamics and potential of the six most prominent civic movements in Albania. In April 2021 we helped monitor parliamentary elections by focusing on the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Last year saw the conclusion of phase two of the Global Equality Project, a programme funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and delivered jointly by Kaleidoscope Trust and Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD). The project focused on fighting discrimination against women and girls, LGBT+ people and other intersectionally disadvantaged groups in a range of countries.
