Online misinformation endangers democracy and the integrity of elections. WFD’s Democracy Action Partnership side-event to the Bali Civil Society and Media Forum (BCSMF) 2023, brings together experience and knowledge of experts involved in factchecking and media literacy campaigns to discuss safeguarding the democracy information ecosystem.

With almost 5 billion people active on the internet, the amount of digital information is growing exponentially. Creating content for the internet has never been simpler because to the abundance of platforms that offer a wide range of formats, including text, images, videos, and more. However, there hasn't been the same level of focus in monitoring content accuracy to match the rise of digital material. Therefore, the dissemination of false narratives and conspiracies, misinformation, and disinformation, is seriously jeopardising democracy and the integrity of elections.

Fact-checking and media literacy programmes are part of the solution.

This panel discussion will see three panelist from three different fact-checking organisations share their individual experiences and insights working on factchecking and media literacy projects.

During this event, the panellists will delve into discussing:

  • The challenges they face while conducting factchecking
  • Their experiences running media literacy education projects
  • Lessons from each organisations with regards to their experience working and collaborating on international projects
