Celebrating young people in democracy

When young people are excluded from political power, or when their concerns are not reflected in policymaking, democracy does not live up to its promise. That’s why inclusion is a central part of WFD’s work.
International Youth Day (IYD) is commemorated every year on 12 August, amplifying youth voices internationally and championing their potential as drivers of global change.
On IYD, explore our impact and join us in celebrating the role of young people in building strong democracies.
WFD has worked to support the role of young people in politics and civic leadership through:
- Establishing and strengthening parliamentary youth caucuses
- Supporting youth-focused civil society organisations and forums
- Facilitating youth manifestos and electoral debates
- Mobilising young people as informed and active voters
- Creating pathways for meaningful political participation
- Promoting greater institutional and parliamentary engagement by young people
- Amplifying youth voices and highlighting issues that require attention from lawmakers
Through locally led programmes, WFD helps build inclusive democracies that protect and promote the rights of young people— recognising them as key drivers of long-term stability and growth.
Spotlight on our impact in Morocco
In close partnership with the Moroccan House of Representatives, WFD supported young people’s political participation and leadership—fostering a more inclusive and responsive decision-making process. This film tells the story.

What does International Youth Day mean to you?

It means recognition and acknowledgment of young people's efforts and contributions to development — especially as this year’s theme on local actions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and beyond presents a great opportunity to showcase the various ways young people have been contributing to the SDGs.

It is a global reminder that youth are not only leaders of tomorrow but also active changemakers today, and even with limited resources, we have unlimited hope.

It is a reminder that we, youth, are not only the future, but we are the present. We should advocate for our goals, for knowledge, for education, for hard work. No one knows better what’s good for us. So, youth should have a seat at the table and fight for a better future — and for a better present.

It is a day to remember that our voices are important in making society more inclusive and sustainable for the next generation. It inspires young people like us to stay involved and to contribute to bringing positive change within our community.

It is a reminder of my generation's collective strength and potential to create positive change. It's a day that makes me feel seen and heard on a global scale. It emphasises that our voices matter — not just in the future, but right now.
