WFD has been working to strengthen democracy in Sierra Leone since 2001. WFD programmes support the Parliament of Sierra Leone in its efforts to become a more open and accessible institution for all citizens. This has ushered the Parliament of Sierra Leone as a key player in the global open government space for openness and transparency. WFD has also supported many institutional strengthening and capacity building programmes of the parliament.
To address democratic challenges and promote youth participation in public affairs, the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) is leading the European Union-funded project “Women and Youth in Democracy”. As members of the EPD, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), together with the Kofi Annan Foundation, and the Oslo Center, are implementing the third pillar of this project “Accountability Hubs”, which aims to improve the inclusion of young people in democracy and decision-making.
Democracy promoters cannot avoid these trade-offs, but with systematic evaluation of past programmes they can navigate them more effectively. This policy paper draws on the Westminster Foundation for Democracy’s experience in parliamentary strengthening to suggest how this might be done.

Violence against women in politics (VAWP) remains a deeply rooted, systemic problem in Indonesia’s relatively young democracy. In this research, we investigated the dynamics of VAWP leading up to, during, and immediately after the 2024 elections by analysing how VAWP threatens women’s political participation and in turn diminishes the quality of Indonesia’s democracy.

Since 2007, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) has been actively engaged in Uganda, working to foster more inclusive, accountable, and transparent democratic systems and institutions. Our programmes have consistently supported and continue to promote greater access and inclusion for structurally disadvantaged groups—including women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs)—in both formal and informal political processes, while also strengthening the capacity of Uganda’s democratic institutions. In addition, WFD has facilitated rigorous scrutiny of government performance, including through evaluations of progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On 26 September 2017, the research collaboration between the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the University of Birmingham launched a new policy paper at the European Endowment for Democracy in Brussels. WFD Research Fellow, Susan Dodsworth reflects on the discussion at the event.
