This paper reviews existing research on political trust, explaining why it is important, what we know about it, and – perhaps most importantly – what we don’t. It argues that if practitioners are to foster greater levels of political trust, research into that phenomenon needs to become more innovative.

On 25 July, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) launched a new Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) to support the advancement of democracy in Nigeria through increased political participation and electoral representation of young people.

There is a global crisis in political finance, where malign interests can distort democratic processes through unregulated donations and foreign interference. New Standards for Integrity in Political Finance, however, are already influencing reforms and WFD is supporting their implementation. By addressing corruption and financial barriers in politics, these standards can restore public trust and ensure democracy represents all citizens, not just those with financial power.
As global disruption tests democracy inside and out, innovation is essential. Democracies must protect civic space and rebuild trust. At WFD, we have explored how digital technologies can support this shift.
