This paper examines the extent to which parliamentary committees provide women in African parliaments with an avenue for influencing laws and policies in the health sector. It maps the inclusion of women in parliamentary committees across sub-Saharan Africa and presents a case study of Malawi, where in 2017 female legislators made use of parliamentary committees to influence a new law on HIV and AIDS – an issue of vital importance to women.

Democracy support actors like WFD need to respond to violence against women in politics as radically as the women who challenge these societal limitations. We need to set a goal of elimination through the transformation of gendered power relations.
The Arab Women Parliamentarians’ Network for Equality or Ra’edat is working with the Scottish National Party through its WFD funded work to improve gender equality.

WFD hosted the inaugural Democracy Action Partnership (DAP) in Bali, Indonesia, gathering democratic changemakers in the Asia region to dive into the interrelated forms of violence against women in politics and elections and facilitate responses.
WFD seeks an external expert on team leadership and facilitation to design and deliver modules on managing teams and building a team culture. Key topics include team planning, empowering individuals, defining roles, leading and motivating, handling difficult conversations, feedback and performance reviews, effective facilitation, and personal wellbeing.

The Scottish National Party WFD programme continued to promote women's political leadership in Southern Africa by hosting a three-day conference for Malawian women parliamentarians to share experience, knowledge, and ideas.
Through this programme, WFD is proud to have supported women MPs across the MENA region to enhance women’s political leadership, promote pathways for women to enter politics, and strengthen legislation to protect women and girls from violence and discrimination.
