On 19-20 March, UK political parties – Conservatives, DUP, Green Party, Liberal Democrats, Labour, Plaid Cymru and SNP – in partnership with WFD, will convene legislators and activists from 20 countries for a two-day conference in London to identify practical means to address violence against women in politics.
This paper provides a global perspective from eight countries to contextualise the discussions to be held on 19-20 March 2018 in London – when legislators, activists and experts from over 20 countries gather for a two-day summit on VAWP.

Looking back at three successful years of WFD’s collaborative programme with the Algerian Parliament
Strong parliaments/legislatures are cornerstones of democracy. In 2019, WFD launched a programme that strengthened its partnership with the Algerian Parliament. Here is a summary of some of the programme’s outcomes after three years of successful implementation.

In less than a year’s time, Nigerians will be heading to the polls. The 2023 general elections scheduled for February/March 2023 will be the 7th since the country returned to democratic governance 23 years ago. This is the longest period of democratic governance in the history of Nigeria. While this is the case, there are a few challenges to be addressed in the journey towards strengthening democracy.

WFD is looking to enter a framework agreement with an expert to enable it to commission technical and administrative support to the Sri Lankan Coalition of Inclusive Impact when designing community research activities and strategy development plans, and coordinating advocacy efforts for inclusive policymaking with identified cross party members, policymakers and legislative stakeholders.

To support stronger democracy in Kenya, WFD has been working in the East African country since 2009: from implementing parliamentary strengthening programmes that enhance the capacities of the National Assembly, Senate, and County Assemblies for more effective representation, legislation, and oversight; to programmes that promote youth and persons with disabilities’ inclusion and participation in politics.
Our programmes in Kenya have produced successes such as helping the Senate to play a more effective role in providing national support and guidance to county governments as per its mandate; helping to pass disability bills in three counties; supporting the set-up of functional disability leagues as channels for engagement of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in politics in four political parties; and, strengthening engagement between parliament and civil society organizations (CSOs) towards greater legislative openness and structured civic engagement.
Our programmes in Kenya have produced successes such as helping the Senate to play a more effective role in providing national support and guidance to county governments as per its mandate; helping to pass disability bills in three counties; supporting the set-up of functional disability leagues as channels for engagement of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in politics in four political parties; and, strengthening engagement between parliament and civil society organizations (CSOs) towards greater legislative openness and structured civic engagement.
