Right before the pandemic closed the airways, in February this year, I had the privilege of speaking at an event hosted by the House of Representatives to discuss the work of their Petitions Committee. Since 2019, WFD has supported the parliament, political parties and civil society to develop and strengthen inclusive, accountable and transparent democratic institutions in the Maldives. Our work has included developing practical and digital tools to enhance parliamentary capacity and transparency, supporting post-legislative scrutiny on key laws, and enabling civil society to engage meaningfully in the legislative process. WFD has been collaborating with the Lebanese parliament since 2006, implementing more than 10 programmes over the last 15 years. In Malaysia, WFD focuses on strengthening the systems, knowledge, and skills of democratic institutions to help them become more inclusive, accountable, and transparent, thereby transforming the country’s political culture. WFD works closely with parliament, government ministries, civil society, academics, and media and bridges the gap between institutions and citizens.

This gap analysis identifies the clear differences in how Sri Lankan laws are experienced by groups like LGBTIQ+ Sri Lankans who live mostly in the margins of Sri Lankan society. Examining a wide variety of laws and policies in Sri Lanka, it demonstrates how LGBTIQ+ Sri Lankans are vulnerable to discrimination across several critical areas, such as education, healthcare and housing.
