WFD started working in the Maldives in July 2019. The Democratic Accountability and Stability Strengthening programme has two main focus areas; enhancing the operation of parliamentary committees to promote accountability and scrutiny of laws, and strengthening of parliamentary processes and procedures for the Parliament to become a more inclusive, gender-responsive and accountable institution. WFD’s work in the Maldives supports MPs, parliamentary staff and civil society organisations through exposure, technical assistance and capacity building opportunities.

WFD wishes to establish a panel of specialist service providers as part of a framework to provide technical services from time to time to support WFD’s capacity and capability. These services are expected to support WFD primarily as part of the Democratic Governance Centre of Expertise, which WFD is delivering in partnership with the FCDO.

The Westminster Foundation for Democracy office in Skopje is established in 2008 and is the first WFD office open outside of the United Kingdom. Since its establishment, the office has worked with institutions, MPs, civil society, political parties, and journalists on advancing democracy, participation and effective public policies.
Across the world, women are under-represented at all levels of formal politics. Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia – the three countries covered by Phase I of the programme – are no different. In Indonesia, women hold 121 of 575 seats in the lower house of parliament, just 21%. In Thailand and Malaysia, just 15% and 14% of seats are held by women. In the second phase of the programme WFD will continue to work towards improving equality in political leadership for diverse groups of women in Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, and Thailand.
WFD has been working in Laos since 2016, partnering with the National (NA) and Provincial People’s Assemblies (PPA) to strengthen core parliamentary mandates including legislative, oversight and representative functions through a gender lens.
WFD tailors its work to the needs of the NA and PPAs with technical support provided to parliamentary committees, aiming to enable MPs and staff to exercise their power and perform their roles more effectively and efficiently. This will allow better respond to the needs and protect the rights of the citizens.
WFD has been working in synergies with local partners and international organizations to enhance accountable and participatory governance in Laos.
