In Malaysia, WFD focuses on strengthening the systems, knowledge, and skills of democratic institutions to help them become more inclusive, accountable, and transparent, thereby transforming the country’s political culture. WFD works closely with parliament, government ministries, civil society, academics, and media and bridges the gap between institutions and citizens.
In Thailand, WFD focuses on strengthening democratic institutions and processes through targeted, impactful programming. We enhance legislative oversight whilst promoting accountability, transparency, inclusion and efficiency within Thailand's political landscape.
WFD works to strengthen the UK-Nepal democratic and parliamentary relationship by sharing knowledge and best practices and exchanging experiences through bilateral as well as regional forums. WFD encourages and supports peer-to-peer learning between parliaments, MPs, and parliamentary staff, as well as one-on-one mentoring, meetings, national workshops, regional seminars, and international conferences. This work benefits and strengthens the functioning of parliamentary practitioners.
WFD has been working in Laos since 2016, partnering with the National (NA) and Provincial People’s Assemblies (PPA) to strengthen core parliamentary mandates including legislative, oversight and representative functions through a gender lens.
More than two decades since the 1998 reforms that brought an end to the New Order regime and returned the power to vote in direct elections to the people, Indonesia is often called a beacon of democracy in the Southeast Asia region. However, challenges to inclusive and accountable politics across the different levels of Indonesia’s complex democracy remain.
WFD Taiwan is working to strengthening democratic resilience by developing evidence-based research and fostering long-term partnerships between democratic actors in Taiwan and their international counterparts. Since November 2021, WFD has been building a strong evidence base of what works in strengthening democratic resilience. This includes conducting political economy analysis, public perception polling, and facilitating roundtable discussions between Taiwan and international peers. Our research, analysis, and engagement provide democratic actors with valuable insights to reinforce democratic values such as transparency, accountability and inclusion.
WFD and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK), facilitated a learning exchange between UK MPs and Sri Lankan counterparts to discuss key issues.
WFD’s youth training workshops are helping Lebanon’s democracy to be more able to ensure that the exploitation of its offshore gas fields benefits the whole of society.

WFD is the UK public body dedicated to strengthening democracy and open societies around the world. We are governed by a board made up of MPs who represent the main UK political parties as well as independent experts.
This course explores the theory and practice of legislative scrutiny and explores the potential role of technology to augment these efforts. The course will take place online and in Berlin from 8–22 January 2026.
In close partnership with the House of Representatives, WFD supported young people’s political participation and leadership—fostering a more inclusive and responsive decision-making process. The initiative has amplified young voices in parliament and set a model for inclusive democratic governance.
